Makaela Jones is a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill majoring in Psychology and Exercise & Sports Science. She says that she chose to double major because she would like to continue her education and receive her Master’s Degree and Ph.D in Sport Psychology.
Makaela is from Silver Spring, Maryland, which is right outside of the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. She got involved with Movement of Youth last semester and has enjoyed her time with the program thus far. Makaela says she got involved with MOY because she wanted to get more involved with youth in the community. In the past, she had not had much experience with mentoring high school students. She says she has taken her experience with Movement of Youth so far as a way to pay it forward.
Makaela’s favorite Movement of Youth memory was doing community service at the historical site in Durham last semester. “The mentees and mentors were able to engage in a more comfortable way, and I was laughing the entire time,” says Makaela. In the future, she hopes to see the organization offer artistic outlets for mentees such as providing canvas, paints, and tools for mentees to create art inspired by their experience with MOY.
